Ford pay the price in privacy glass mix up

Ford pay the price in Focus-ST privacy glass blunder

Privacy glass is becoming more and more popular in new cars.  The back 3/4 of the car being tinted in darker glass.  Looks great too.  In a recent blunder reported by Auto Express Magazine, Ford have released the new FOCUS ST-3 with normal green tinted glass and not the privacy glass as it states in the brochure.

A Ford spokesman said "This was a price list error which was rectified as swiftly as possible.  We offered two options:  £300 compensation, or an ST-3 reordered with glass fitted free of charge"

£300 would NOT cover the cost of changing five windows in the rear of the car to privacy glass so this seems a weak option by Ford.

Windscreen Wipers to be replaced?

#windscreens #windscreenrepairs #chiprepairs #auto #glass #wipers #windscreenwipers

Removing wipers could improve cars’ fuel economy without the weight of wiper motors.
McLaren called the wiper, created in 1903, “archaic”.
Jet fighter technology that fires ultrasonic soundwaves over windscreens to keep off rain could end the car wiper blade’s 100-year reign.

Supercar maker McLaren is said to have a system that is due to arrive after 2015.
It could cost as little as £10.
Prof Paul Wilcox of Bristol University said the vibration would not be visible as it is at “nanometer level”.

Will having a windscreen camera mean I’ll fail my MOT?

Q. A few years ago I had a camera fitted to my windscreen so I would have video evidence in the event of a collision or fraudulent insurance claim. Previously this has caused no problem at the MoT test, but before my most recent inspection my garage removed the device, saying my car would have failed otherwise. Why is this, and would refitting the camera be breaking the law?

A. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa, now replaced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, or DVSA) wrote to all MoT test centres in March to clarify the rules relating to windscreen obstructions, which may explain why your camera was removed. In simple terms, a car may fail its MoT if there is damage or an obstruction in the “swept area” of the windscreen greater than a 40mm diameter circle. In “zone A” — a 290mm-wide band of the screen immediately in front of the driver and centred on the middle of the steering wheel — this is reduced to a 10mm-diameter circle.

The incident happened at around 11:00 local time on Wednesday on the busy I-95 motorway in the US.
Massachusetts State Police said that the woman in the car was "shaken" but not injured.
A landscaper was fined $200 for failing to secure the axe.   Read more http://autoglazemanchester.co.uk/index.html

Virtual Windscreen

Jaguar is developing a ‘virtual windscreen concept'. In short, it is an excellent thing that allows you to pretend you are actually in Gran Turismo.
Sure, Jaguar highlights the practical, road-going aspects of this ‘virtual windscreen': high quality virtual imagery displaying hazard, speed and navigation icons onto the screen so you never have to take your eyes off the road.
But, "for performance drivers" on a race circuit, the benefits include virtual racing lines and brake guidance projected onto the windscreen, ‘ghost car' racing - where your previous lap is ‘ghosted' so you can better your times - and virtual cones for driver training
"Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for everyday driving on the road or the track," explains Dr Wolfgang Epple, research and technology director at Jaguar.
Not only is Jag working on a videogame windscreen, but also a gesture control system so the driver need never again reach for a pesky button. It uses something called ‘e-field' sensing, based on ‘capacitive discharge touch screens'; it can detect the proximity of a user's hand up to around 15cm (a smartphone recognizes a user's finger from 5mm away), meaning it can track gestures. Just be careful what you gesture.
"Gesture control has become an accepted form of controlling anything from TV sets to games consoles," explains Dr Epple. "The system is currently being tested on a number of features including sunblinds, rear wipers and sat nav maps. It has the potential to be on sale within the next few years."
Then there's the tech that will soon replace rear view and external mirrors with virtual displays and cameras using a 3D instrument cluster for better depth perception.
Sounds exciting, no? Just remember though, the virtual windscreen isn't actually a videogame, and so crashing into a barrier and using other cars to slow yourself down on a track isn't advisable.

Where's my Windscreen gone?

Windscreen-less lorry driver keeps cool by attaching roof with rope

This lorry driver in China seems to have found a novel
- if dangerous - way to keep cool after he was spotted
driving not only without a windscreen but also a roof - which had to be
tied down with several pieces of rope.
